Turtle Island: Day 8

SHE SAID: DAY 8

After a wonderful night with the group, I was sad to head over to breakfast. I knew this would be our last meal on the island, as our seaplane was scheduled to depart at noon. Since our flight was not until 10:30pm that evening, Mama Oni made arrangements for a day room.

Breakfast again was another amazing meal. Have I mentioned, we ate so well on this trip? Well we did and my pants being extra tight these days reflect how good we really ate! After breakfast, we went back to the bure to finish packing. We also had to finish our stone. As you walk up to each bure, the walkway is made out of stones created by the guests that have stayed in that bure. Here’s what Tom and I created….we were never art majors…..

Around 11am, we opted to head out to the main area. This extra hour would allow us to enjoy the final time on the island, as well as, spend more time with the staff. The island motto is that once you come to Turtle Island, you are no longer a guest but a member of the family. I truly felt attached to the island. I still feel attached to the island. I feel like an exclusive member of a club. I love telling people about our trip. Not because I want to brag about how truly lucky we were to take the trip but instead because everyone should experience this kind of service during their lifetime. Everyone should go to a place they’ve never been and instantly feel like they are home.

Leaving the island was a beautiful experience. As you walk down the dock to the plane, the staff sings to you. And just as you’re about to board the plane, they sing you their farewell song. It was so beautiful and again, I cried.

Highlight of Day 8: Feeling so fortunate that we were given the opportunity to visit Turtle Island.

He Said: Day 8 – the trip home.

I don’t know if it was the kava or not but I did not sleep well our last night on the island – I wonder if this lead to the range of emotions I/we felt. I was a little excited to be heading home and at the same time sad to know that it was all coming to an end. If anything I know for sure, I was not looking forward to reading all the emails and catching up on the phone calls.

We had one last phenomenal breakfast before heading back to the bure to finalize our packing and getting ready to go. As one of the four couples leaving that day, we headed down the beach and waited for the first sea plane on “death row” – where couples sit and watch the planes come in to take them back to reality. We had that uneasy feeling of being ready to go and wanting to stay. Eventually, after a couple goodbyes the plane came and we prepared to board. As part of the “send off” our bure mama and a few others walked out to the plane with us and sang us the Sota Tale (see you later) song – not the goodbye song. Then we boarded the small plane.

Our entire visit the weather was perfect – light fluffy clouds (if any at all), zero humidity, a nice breeze. Today, as we left, we were greeted with a light sprinkle just before takeoff. Somehow this seemed very fitting. The flight back this time was still spent watching the ocean but with a hint of sadness; not the excitement and anticipation of arrival. After a short flight we ended up back on the island we flew into. A quick van ride got us to our, at the recommendation of other Turtle guests, day room. Considering we had about 10 hours to kill before our flight back to LA, this was a GREAT, reasonable investment. Once we got into our room, it was very strange to turn on the TV and hear all the world news and get back into the “buzz” of daily life. We spent a little time napping, adjusting and watching 3 Men and A Baby before it was time to head to the airport and home.

You can imagine the rest of the trip home. Lots of hurry up and wait in an effort to get through the airport security, customs and picking up our luggage. Maybe the strangest part of the return trip was leaving Nandi at 10PM on Tuesday and arriving back in Phoenix at 5:00PM the same day. Thankfully we had a ride pick us at the airport and we quickly made it back home to the supreme excitement of our girls (OK…dogs).

In summary, this trip was truly an amazing, once in a lifetime (hopefully not) experience. I could not have wished for anything more for a honeymoon. I just wish I would have been able to get into the spirit of the relaxed lifestyle on the island. That is just something I’ll have to work on for the next time!

Highlight of day 8: finally making it home to my bed
